Meaningful Icons Return to Crime Map

This week marks the return of meaningful icons. Each crime icon again clues you into the type of crime committed. Cars for the stolen and recovered vehicles, a business building for a business burglary, a house for a residential burglary, a shopping bag for a personal robbery.

You get the picture.

These icons are part of the site I use to make the maps. I'm working on a set specifically for Lakeland Crime.

More Time, More Crime

I mentioned yesterday that LPD is producing their own online crime maps. You can see Asst. Chief Bill LePere's post about it here. He's very kind. I just pointed out a couple of things. He has a creative and quick team.

I first produced the maps only because Asst. Chief LePere thought to make the data available to the public. We have a pretty open police department in Lakeland. That's something to you don't see enough in this world.

I was happy to make the maps. I worked as a cartographer for a bit in my younger days. It's nice to use the new tools.

I'm not stopping though. I mentioned yesterday I wanted to produce maps for my own site to finish a year's worth. That should be early May. I'll continue posting them on Lakeland Crime.

However, here at Lakeland Local I'll just post links to the maps.

Lakeland Crime Map Changes

Take a look at Inside LPD, the Lakeland Police Department's website. You'll see they have the latest crime map up before I do. Yes, the LPD has a new programmer. He and I worked together Monday, and from now on the LPD is going to do their Web-based crime maps in house. Asst. Chief Bill LePere and Sergeant Terri Smith are very technology oriented, and we should look to LPD expanding their services on the Web.

I'm going to finish out one year's worth of the weekly maps and then stop. There's no sense in duplicating the work.

However, I'm not going to stop making crime maps. I will still get the data from LPD each week and I have some ideas about presenting it in different ways.

Lakeland Crime

I'm moving the crime maps to their own subdomain: Lakeland Crime. Right now there are just the last couple of maps, but after BlogOrlando I'll have time to put in the running statistics and other crime maps. I'll still mention here when new maps are posted.

For those new to the maps: I map various crime incidents each week for Lakeland. The data is supplied weekly by the Lakeland Police Department and I give the maps to them and the Ledger for their websites.

Though I publish small maps for quick looks, I recommend you use the links to the full page maps for a better look at what crime is happening in your community.

Anyway, though it is not quite finished, check out Lakeland Crime for this week's crime map.

Lakeland Crime Maps

There's a change in store for the Lakeland Crime Maps. That news a little later. but for now here are links to the Lakeland Crime 09/03 and Lakeland Crime 08/27 maps.

You'll notice the top right corner of the map has a pull-down entitled "Legend." Pull that down to find check boxes for each category listed on the map. Now you can see only those categories that interest you. They're all easy to toggle on and off.

In addition to the house icon for Residential Burglaries, we have auto icons for Stolen Vehicles and Recovered Stolen Vehicles. Plus, for the occasional Residential Robbery we'll show a bed. Note: Vehicle Burglaries are "salmon" icons. That category covers almost half the items on the map. Anything too bold overwhelms the map.

Notes: You can click on a map pin to see the address and type of report. Click and hold to grab the map and move it around. When you click on a pin the address and call time is listed in the pop-up windows.

Lakeland Crime Map June 18 to June 24

We're back from hiatus with our 16th Lakeland Crime Map.

On to the usual explanation...

You'll notice the top right corner of the map has a pull-down entitled "Legend." Pull that down to find check boxes for each category listed on the map. Now you can see only those categories that interest you. They're all easy to toggle on and off.

In addition to the house icon for Residential Burglaries, we now have auto icons for Stolen Vehicles and Recovered Stolen Vehicles. Plus, for the occasional Residential Robbery we'll show a bed. Note: Vehicle Burglaries are "salmon" icons. That category covers almost half the items on the map. Anything too bold overwhelms the map.
