Lakeland Crime Map Changes
Posted by Chuck Welch on January 9, 2008 9:09 AM | Permalink | Comments (2)
Take a look at Inside LPD, the Lakeland Police Department's website. You'll see they have the latest crime map up before I do. Yes, the LPD has a new programmer. He and I worked together Monday, and from now on the LPD is going to do their Web-based crime maps in house. Asst. Chief Bill LePere and Sergeant Terri Smith are very technology oriented, and we should look to LPD expanding their services on the Web.
I'm going to finish out one year's worth of the weekly maps and then stop. There's no sense in duplicating the work.
However, I'm not going to stop making crime maps. I will still get the data from LPD each week and I have some ideas about presenting it in different ways.

Chuck ~ we are grateful for your help in producing the weekly crime maps for so many months and for finally getting us up running so we can produce the code ourselves. Your assistance has helped get vital crime information out to the community ~ a service that we hear is very popular with residents who want to know what crimes are happening in their neighborhoods. The maps have been picked up by several local blogs and even others across the state. Thank you again for your help in these regards.

Thanks. I've really enjoyed making the maps. Well, at least after I worked out the kinks. It has really helped me understand the nature of property crimes in our city.
When people ask what property crime is like in Lakeland, they don't have to depend on hearsay. They can look it up themselves.
I think LPD should be commended for making the data available for the public. It's part of a pattern of openness that I believe is far too rare in government.
